Cultiva Carbono - El Mesto

The Carbon Sequestration and Emission Reduction Project at Hacienda El Mesto, managed by El Mesto S.L. in the Province of Jaén, Spain, focuses on enhancing sustainability within the agricultural sector. Spanning 1,091 hectares, the project includes traditional olive groves, intensive farming, and managed forest areas, all of which contribute to significant ecological value. Since its inception in 2018, the initiative has successfully removed 36,484 tCO2eq of carbon, generating 28,046 ex-post credits in compliance with recognized environmental standards. Additionally, it actively supports biodiversity through its management of diverse ecosystems and participation in the Natura 2000 network. By sustaining this project, contributors play a vital role in promoting sustainable practices and combating climate change.

  • Annual evaluation and management of a Biodiversity Action Plan, reflecting the commitment to environmental conservation.

Project Overview:

El Mesto S.L. manages the Hacienda El Mesto farm, a flagship farm known for traditional olive groves in the Province of Jaén, Spain. The project focuses on carbon sequestration and emission reduction in the agricultural sector, emphasizing the sustainable use of resources and a commitment to environmental conservation. The farm comprises 1,091 productive hectares with traditional, intensive, and hedgerow farming systems. Notably, the traditional olive grove consists of Picual variety trees over 100 years old, contributing significantly to ecological value.

Since 2018, the project has quantified and verified the removal of 36,484 tCO2eq of soil and biomass net carbon, resulting in the generation of 28,046 ex-post credits. This achievement aligns with the Trinity Natural Capital Markets standard and the Cultiva Carbono project methodology. The property, with diverse enclaves within the crop and areas of unproductive and forested land, supports interconnectivity between forest and agricultural ecosystems. This approach promotes the development and conservation of a diverse range of species, contributing to the protected natural areas of the Natura 2000 network with which it shares borders.

The project's commitment to environmental conservation is further reflected in the annual evaluation and management of a Biodiversity Action Plan. Your support for this project helps sustainably manage agricultural practices, protect biodiversity, and mitigate carbon emissions in the region.
